Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s largest national park, covering over 20,000 km². It is named after the Great Ruaha River, which flows along its southeastern boundary, attracting large herds of elephants, buffaloes, and many predators during the dry season.
The park is a unique ecological crossroads, where East African and Southern African ecosystems meet — meaning you can find both savannah species (like lions, giraffes, and zebras) and miombo woodland species (like roan and sable antelopes) in one place.
Ruaha is known for its high density of lions, huge herds of elephants, over 570 bird species, and dramatic landscapes of baobab-dotted hills, rocky outcrops, and sweeping plains. It offers a true sense of the wild, with fewer tourists and a raw, untouched atmosphere ideal for serious safari lovers, photographers, and adventurers.
